Things to do

San Carlos, Sonora

What is genuinely worth it

San Carlos earns its keep on and in the water. Rank your time accordingly.

Diving and snorkeling (the main event)

This is why the town exists as a destination. The Sea of Cortez here is clear and full of life, with rays, sea lions, tropical fish and decent visibility in spring and fall. San Pedro Nolasco island, a boat ride offshore, is the standout for sea lions and better diving. Book a boat day and make this the anchor of your trip.

Sportfishing

Genuinely good. Charters go out for dorado, marlin, sailfish and more depending on season. Not cheap, but the fishing is real, not a tourist gimmick.

Hiking Cerro Tetakawi

The twin-peaked hill over town has a trail up the saddle (“Tetakawi” access). It is a short, steep, rocky climb with a strong payoff over the bay. Go early to beat the heat and carry more water than you think you need.

Kayaking, boating and the estuary

Paddling around the coves and the estuary is calm and rewarding, with good birdlife. Sunset boat cruises are pleasant and low-key.

What is oversold

  • The beaches themselves. They are fine and pleasant, but people expecting wide Caribbean sand will be underwhelmed. The water is the draw, not the beach.
  • Nightlife. Thin. A few bars and restaurant patios, and that is it. Do not come for a party scene.
  • The town as a sightseeing destination. There is not much to “see” beyond the setting. This is a do-things-on-the-water town, not a wander-the-streets town.

What a local would tell you

Spend on one good boat day and the rest takes care of itself.
