San Carlos

Calm Sea of Cortez diving under the twin-peaked Tetakawi

“The clear, sheltered Sea of Cortez water makes this a solid diving, snorkeling, and sportfishing base, popular with snowbirds and refreshingly unglitzy.”

What San Carlos actually is

San Carlos is a low-key beach town on the Sea of Cortez, about 15 minutes past the working port city of Guaymas. It is not a resort strip and does not pretend to be one. The pull here is the water: sheltered, clear, and full of life, sitting under the twin peaks of Cerro Tetakawi. People come to dive, snorkel, fish and putter around on boats, and a big share of them are American and Canadian snowbirds who winter here in RVs and condos.

The honest verdict

Worth it, if the water is why you are coming. The diving, snorkeling and sportfishing are genuinely good, and the town stays refreshingly unglitzy and cheap compared with Baja or the Riviera Maya. It will disappoint anyone chasing nightlife, big beaches or a polished tourist scene. The one real caveat is location: San Carlos itself is calm, but the Guaymas corridor next door has seen cartel violence, so it is a place where you check current conditions before you drive.

Orienting yourself

The town is small and strung along one main road, from the marina area out toward the beaches and the Los Algodones dunes. You can see the highlights in about 3 days: a day on the water, a day at the beach or hiking Tetakawi, and a day for a boat trip out to San Pedro island or the estuary. Spring (March through May) and fall (October, November) are the sweet spots, with warm, clear water and bearable temperatures. Skip July and August, when the heat is punishing.

How we would play it

Fly into Guaymas or, more often, drive down from Arizona. Base near the marina or one of the beach condos, book one boat day for diving or fishing early in your trip, and keep the rest loose for beach time and sunset. Eat seafood, watch the light hit Tetakawi, and treat Guaymas as a supply run rather than a destination.

bestthink twice

Summer is intensely hot. Water clarity and comfort peak in fall and spring. Note the neighboring Guaymas corridor has had cartel violence, so check conditions.
