Getting there & around
San Carlos, Sonora
Getting there
Driving. This is how most visitors arrive. San Carlos is a long but straightforward drive south from the Arizona border (Nogales), roughly 5 to 6 hours of highway on the toll road (Highway 15). Many snowbirds do it in a day. Drive the Guaymas stretch in daylight, keep fuel and supply stops brief, and carry your vehicle permit and Mexican auto insurance.
Flying. The nearest airport is Guaymas (GYM), about 20 to 30 minutes away, but it has limited service. Many travelers instead fly into Hermosillo (HMO), about 1.5 to 2 hours north by road, which has far more flights, and then rent a car or arrange a shuttle.
Bus. Long-distance buses run to Guaymas from Hermosillo, Nogales and beyond. From the Guaymas terminal you finish the last leg to San Carlos by taxi or local ride, roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
Getting around
San Carlos is small and spread along one main road, so having wheels helps a lot.
- Car or RV. The easiest option, and what most people have. Parking is simple.
- Golf carts. A common local runabout, especially around condos and the marina.
- Taxis and rides. Available but not dense; arrange return trips in advance, especially at night.
- Walking and cycling. Fine within a neighborhood, less so end to end in summer heat.
Honest note
There is no polished tourist transport network here. Plan to drive or rent, budget the daylight highway time, and treat Hermosillo as your reliable air gateway if Guaymas flights do not line up.
