Where locals go

Xalapa, Veracruz

Where locals actually go

Xalapa is a student and government town, so the real life happens in cafes and casual spots, not on any tourist strip.

  • The neighborhood cafes. Locals take coffee seriously and take it slow. Away from the main plaza you will find small roaster-run cafes full of students with laptops and older regulars reading the paper. This is the everyday scene, and it is cheap.
  • Mercado Jáuregui and the market fondas. For an ordinary weekday lunch, people head to the market comedores for a cheap comida corrida rather than a sit-down restaurant.
  • Los Lagos in the morning. The lakeside path is where residents walk, jog and take the kids on a day off, especially when the drizzle lifts.
  • The cantinas and student bars. Nightlife here is unpretentious. Locals drink at old cantinas and low-key bars around the center where a beer comes with botanas, rather than anywhere polished.
  • Weekend escapes to Coatepec. On a free day, plenty of xalapeños drive the short way to nearby Coatepec for coffee and a wander, treating it as their local getaway.

What a friend here would tell you: the good version of Xalapa is not a place, it is a pace. Sit in a cafe long enough to see the same faces come back.
