Xalapa

Coffee, cloud forest, and Mexico's second-best archaeology museum.

“The anthropology museum, the coffee, and the cloud-forest weather make it the best base in the state, if you don't mind constant drizzle.”

What Xalapa actually is

Xalapa is the state capital of Veracruz, a university city sitting up in the hills where the coast’s heat gives way to cloud forest. It is green, misty and cooler than almost anywhere else in the state, with a big student population, a serious coffee culture and one of the best anthropology museums in the country. This is not a beach town and it does not pretend to be one. People come here for the museum, the cafes, the walkable old center, and the cool weather.

The honest verdict

Worth it — Xalapa earns its place because the anthropology museum is genuinely world-class, the coffee is the real thing, and the cool cloud-forest climate is a relief if you have been sweating on the coast. The catch is the weather. Locals call the fine, constant drizzle chipi-chipi, and it can hang around for days even in the “dry” months. If gray skies and damp air ruin your trip, Xalapa is not for you. If you like sweaters, coffee and museums, it is the best base in the state.

How long and when

Two days is about right. That covers the museum properly, the historic center, and enough cafe time to feel the rhythm of the place. The easiest months are March, April and May, still cool but with the lightest rain. Avoid September and October, when it rains hardest. Whenever you come, pack a jacket and something waterproof, always.

How we’d play it

Give the anthropology museum a full unhurried morning, it deserves it. Spend the afternoon wandering the center around Parque Juárez and Los Berros, ducking into cafes when the drizzle sets in. On day two, slow down: a long coffee, the market, and if the sky clears, a day trip out to the coffee country or waterfalls nearby. Treat the weather as part of the experience rather than fighting it.

Cool and often drizzly year-round (locals call it chipi-chipi). Rains heaviest June-October. Even in the 'dry' months, bring a jacket.
