Getting there & around
El Fuerte, Sinaloa
Getting there
By air, then road. The nearest airport is Los Mochis (LMM), the main gateway to this corner of Sinaloa. From there it is roughly an hour and a half by road to El Fuerte. You can arrange a private transfer, take a taxi, or connect by regional bus toward El Fuerte. Most El Chepe travelers route through Los Mochis.
By bus. Regional buses and vans connect Los Mochis with El Fuerte through the day, an approximate one-and-a-half to two hour ride depending on the service and stops. Comfortable enough for a short hop; check current schedules locally rather than assuming fixed times.
By train. The headline reason people come: El Fuerte is the western jump-off for the El Chepe train through the Copper Canyon. The station is just outside the town center. Book the train ahead in the busy winter and spring months, and confirm your departure time the day before.
Getting around
Once you are in El Fuerte you do not need a car. The historic center is compact and flat enough to walk in minutes, and the plaza, church, fort-museum and hotels are all close together. For the river boat launches, the train station and anything on the edge of town, grab a short taxi or arrange a lift through your hotel, which many will do. Have your hotel line up an early transfer if your train leaves at dawn.
An honest note
This is northern Sinaloa. The town is calm, but regional road conditions can change, so prefer daytime for any overland travel and ask locally about current conditions before driving highways at night.
