Things to do

San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi

Worth your time

San Luis Potosi rewards slow walking more than a long checklist. Here’s the honest ranking.

  • Templo del Carmen and Plaza del Carmen — The single best thing in the city. The church’s carved facade and gilded interior are genuinely worth stopping for, and the plaza in front is the nicest spot in the center to sit. Start here.
  • Walking the plazas — Plaza de Armas by the cathedral, the pedestrian Calle Zaragoza, and Jardin de San Francisco strung together make the best afternoon in town. This is the reason to come and it costs nothing.
  • Museo Federico Silva — A sculpture museum in a striking old building. Small but well done, and a good pick if the day turns hot or you want an hour indoors.
  • Centro de las Artes — A former prison turned arts center, a short ride from the core. Worth it if you like contemporary art or unusual architecture; skippable if you don’t.
  • Museo Nacional de la Mascara — A mask museum that’s more interesting than it sounds, covering festival traditions from across the country.

Overrated or skippable

  • Chasing a long list of churches — Beyond the Carmen and the cathedral, the others blur together fast. See one or two and stop.
  • The Tangamanga park — A big city park that’s fine for a jog if you live here, but not a reason to spend tourist hours.

The honest read

This is a half-day to full-day city for sights, not a multi-day one. If you find yourself hunting for a fourth museum, that’s your cue to book a day trip to Real de Catorce instead, or move on to Guanajuato or Zacatecas.
