Day trips

San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi

The one to plan around

Real de Catorce — Approximately 3 to 3.5 hours northeast by car or bus. This is the trip that justifies basing yourself in the capital. An old silver-mining town in the high sierra, reached through a long single-lane tunnel, half ghost town and half pilgrimage site. It’s genuinely unlike anywhere else in the state and worth the effort. Easiest as an overnight rather than a rushed day trip, given the drive.

Worth it if you have time

  • Media Luna — Around 1.5 to 2 hours away, a spring-fed lagoon with startlingly clear water that draws divers and swimmers. Good on a warm day; less compelling in cool months.
  • Sierra de Alvarez and the countryside east of the city — Under an hour out, pine-covered hills and quiet backroads that locals use for weekend drives. Pleasant rather than essential.

The bigger detour

  • The Huasteca Potosina — This is the state’s headline region: turquoise waterfalls like Tamul and Tamasopo, rivers and jungle. But it’s roughly 4 to 5 hours east and deserves its own multi-day trip, not a day run from the capital. If it’s your main goal, base out there instead of here.

Honest take

For a short stay, Real de Catorce is the standout and the rest are optional. If your schedule is tight, the capital plus one night in Real de Catorce is the trip worth doing.
