Is it safe?

Holbox, Quintana Roo

Is Holbox safe?

Yes — Holbox is one of the more relaxed places in Quintana Roo. It’s a small island with no cars, a tight community, and a steady flow of visitors, so violent crime is not the story here. You can walk the central streets and the plaza comfortably day and night, and the short lanes near the ferry dock stay busy into the evening.

What the real risks are

  • Petty theft, not headlines. The main issue is opportunistic — bags left on the beach, phones on a bar table, or valuables in an unlocked cart. Keep an eye on your things and you’ll almost never have a problem.
  • The streets themselves. Sand roads are uneven and unlit once you leave the center. Walking or biking back at night, bring a phone light and go slow — a rolled ankle or a spill off a bike is the likeliest way to get hurt here.
  • The water. The lagoon side is shallow and calm, but currents and boat traffic near the sandbars are real. On whale-shark and snorkel tours, listen to the crew and stay with the group.
  • Cash and mosquitoes. ATMs fail often, so protect the cash you brought. And the bugs are serious at dusk — repellent matters more than any safety worry.

What a local would tell you

Don’t overthink it. Lock your bike, don’t leave your phone unattended on the sand, and watch your footing after dark. That’s the whole playbook.
