Trips worth making from Holbox
Holbox is remote, so most “day trips” are boat excursions around the island itself rather than mainland outings. Be realistic — getting off the island and back in a day eats hours on the ferry and the road.
On-the-water tours (from Holbox)
- Whale sharks (June to September), about a half-day at sea. The one true must-do, in season. Longer and sometimes choppy, but worth every minute. Absolutely worth it.
- The “three islands” combo — Isla Pasión, Yalahau spring, Bird Island — about 3 to 4 hours. A relaxed boat loop with a freshwater cenote-spring swim and a flamingo-spotting stop. Pleasant, a bit padded with waiting. Worth it if you want a full lazy day on the water; skippable if short on time.
- Punta Mosquito sandbar, a half-day by bike. Not a boat trip at all — pedal to the sandbar at low tide for shallow water and flamingos. Cheap, self-guided, genuinely good.
Mainland trips
- Río Lagartos and Las Coloradas (the pink lakes), roughly a long day. You’d ferry to Chiquilá and drive west — it’s a big commitment for one day and better done as a stop if you’re driving onward. Worth it only if pink lakes and flamingos are a priority.
- Valladolid and nearby cenotes, a long day. Doable but rushed from the island. Better saved for after you cross back to the mainland.
Honest take
The best of Holbox is Holbox. Save the far-flung stops for when you’re back on the mainland rather than burning a whole island day on ferries and roads.
