Getting there & around

Holbox, Quintana Roo

Getting to Holbox

There’s no airport on the island — you fly into Cancún (CUN) and make your way to the town of Chiquilá, where the ferry leaves.

  • From Cancún airport or downtown. It’s roughly a 2.5-to-3-hour drive north to Chiquilá. You can rent a car, take a private transfer, or catch an ADO bus. Direct ADO buses run from Cancún to Chiquilá a few times a day — comfortable and cheap, but check the schedule so it lines up with a ferry.
  • The ferry. Two companies run passenger boats across from Chiquilá, roughly every half hour to hour through the day, taking about 20 to 30 minutes. It’s a short, usually easy crossing. Approximate fares only — the site verifies current prices separately.
  • Driving note. If you drive, you leave the car in a paid guarded lot in Chiquilá; cars don’t go to the island. Watch the last-ferry time so you don’t get stranded on the mainland.

Getting around once you’re there

No cars. Your options are:

  • Walking — the whole town center is a 10-to-15-minute stroll end to end.
  • Bikes — the best way to reach the beaches and sandbars; rent one for your stay.
  • Golf-cart taxis — flag them in the street or at the plaza for luggage runs and longer hops. Cheap, but agree on the fare first.

Honest note: the sand streets are bumpy and flood after heavy rain, so give yourself extra time and don’t count on a smooth ride with heavy bags.
