Getting there & around
Monterrey, Nuevo León
Getting there
By air. Monterrey’s airport (MTY) sits east of the city and is a major domestic hub with plenty of connections to Mexico City, Guadalajara and the border, plus US flights. From the airport into San Pedro or downtown is roughly 30 to 50 minutes by car depending on traffic, and traffic here is real. Use an official airport taxi or a ride-share.
By bus. Monterrey is a big long-haul bus hub. First-class lines run comfortable overnight and daytime services to Mexico City (around 10 to 12 hours), Saltillo (about 1.5 hours) and points across the north. The main bus station is near the center, in an area worth leaving promptly and not lingering around after dark.
By car. The city sits on major toll highways and driving in from Saltillo, Texas or elsewhere in the north is straightforward, if fast and aggressive once you hit the ring roads.
Getting around
Monterrey is built for cars and it sprawls, so you’ll rely on ride-shares, which are cheap, plentiful and the easiest option for a visitor. The metro (two main lines) is fine for a few direct downtown hops but doesn’t reach the places you’ll most want, like San Pedro or Chipinque.
Renting a car makes sense if you’re doing the mountains and day trips like Grutas de García or Santiago, since those are awkward without your own wheels. In the city center itself, parking and traffic make a car more hassle than help. Honest note: distances feel short on a map and long in reality once traffic sets in, so pad your timing.
