Day trips
Monterrey, Nuevo León
The best of Monterrey is often just outside it. These are the trips worth the drive.
Grutas de García — about 45 to 60 minutes
A large cave system in the mountains northwest of the city, reached by a cable car up the hillside. It’s a genuinely impressive half-day and the standout natural day trip. Worth it, and easy to pair with the Huasteca canyon on the same loop.
Cañón de la Huasteca — about 30 to 45 minutes
Dramatic, steep rock walls right on the western edge of the metro area, popular for climbing, cycling and just gawking at the scale. Quick to reach and free to drive through. Worth it, especially combined with Grutas de García.
Santiago and Cola de Caballo — about 45 minutes to 1 hour
South of the city, the pueblo mágico of Santiago has a pretty little plaza and food stalls, and just beyond it the Cola de Caballo (horsetail) waterfall. The falls are modest and can run thin in dry months, so manage expectations, but the whole area with the Presa de la Boca reservoir makes a relaxed regio day out. Worth it as a package, less so for the waterfall alone.
Saltillo — about 1.5 hours
The capital of neighboring Coahuila, a calmer colonial city with a good cathedral and cooler mountain air. A worthwhile change of pace if you have a spare day and want streets to wander rather than another trail.
Honest note: all of these are far easier with a car. Without one, you’re relying on tours or arranged drivers, which works but costs more and ties you to their timing.
