Visiting info
Río Lagartos, Yucatán
Hours and fees (approximate)
Río Lagartos itself is an open town with no gate or entry fee. The costs are the boat tour and, if you go, the entry at Las Coloradas.
- Lagoon boat tours run roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Prices are usually quoted per boat, so splitting with others brings the per-person cost down. Figure on a shared-boat rate in the low hundreds of pesos per person, more if you’re a small group booking privately. These figures are approximate; the site verifies exact rates separately.
- Las Coloradas charges a modest entry fee, typically a low per-person amount in pesos, often bundled into tours. Swimming is not allowed in the pink ponds.
Booking through a licensed operator on the malecón is the norm; you don’t need to reserve far ahead outside peak weekends.
How long to allow
A half day covers the boat trip and Las Coloradas comfortably. A full day, ideally an overnight, lets you slow down and catch better light.
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are best for the flamingos and for cooler air on the open water. Las Coloradas photographs pinkest under strong midday sun, so if you want both, do the ponds in the middle of the day and the lagoon tour at either end.
What to bring
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen. There’s little shade on the boat or at the salt flats.
- Water and a light long-sleeve layer against sun and wind.
- Cash in pesos; card acceptance is patchy up here.
- Binoculars and a zoom lens if you’re serious about the birds.
- Closed shoes or sandals you don’t mind getting salty.
