Getting there & around

Río Lagartos, Yucatán

Getting to Río Lagartos

Río Lagartos sits on the far north coast, so every route involves a real drive. The nearest airport is Mérida (MID), roughly 3 to 3.5 hours away by car. From Cancún it’s closer to 3.5 to 4 hours. Many people fold it in from Valladolid, which is the most sensible base at about 1.5 to 2 hours south.

Driving is by far the easiest option. The roads in from Valladolid and Tizimín are paved and generally quiet, though watch for topes (speed bumps) through small towns and the occasional pothole. Fill your tank before you go, since gas stations thin out up here.

By bus, you can reach the area via Tizimín, the regional hub, with connections from Valladolid or Mérida. Expect a transfer and a slower, less frequent schedule than the main tourist corridors. Buses are fine but plan the timing carefully; service dries up in the evening. All times are approximate.

Getting around once there

The town itself is small and walkable, a few blocks along the waterfront. You won’t need a car within Río Lagartos. What you do need is a boat: the lagoon tours leave from the malecón and are the whole point of coming.

For Las Coloradas, about 20 to 30 minutes east, you’ll want your own car or a spot on a tour that includes it. There’s no reliable public transport between the two, so factor that into your plan if you arrived by bus. Booking a combined boat-and-Coloradas tour with a licensed operator solves the logistics in one go.
