Day trips from Veracruz

The city itself is a two-day stop, but the region around it is rich, and a couple of these are genuinely worth the drive.

La Antigua (about 40 minutes) - worth it

A small, shady riverside town where the Spanish first settled, with the crumbling ruins of an early colonial house and a huge ceiba-shaded square. Easy, low-key, and a nice half-day that pairs with a riverside seafood lunch.

Xalapa (about 1.5 to 2 hours) - worth it if you have the day

The state capital in the cooler highlands, greener and more relaxed, with the excellent Museo de Antropologia holding the giant Olmec stone heads. If you care about pre-Hispanic history, this museum alone justifies the trip. Bring a layer, it’s markedly cooler than the coast.

Cempoala / Zempoala (about 45 minutes) - worth it for ruins fans

Totonac ruins where Cortes made his first major alliance. Modest compared with Mexico’s big sites, but historically important and rarely crowded.

Boca del Rio and Anton Lizardo beaches (about 20 to 40 minutes) - worth it for a swim

If you want actual beach time, head south of the city where the water is cleaner than the port. This is where locals go to swim, and it fixes the one thing the city center can’t offer.

Cordoba and Orizaba (about 1.5 to 2 hours) - only with extra time

Pleasant highland towns with coffee heritage and, at Orizaba, a cable car up toward the volcano views. Nice, but skip on a short trip.

Travel times are approximate and depend on traffic and weather.
