Visiting info

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala

Hours and fees (approximate)

Cacaxtla is run by INAH and generally opens daily from around 9am to 5pm, with last entry an hour or so before closing. Admission is a modest INAH site fee, roughly 90 to 100 pesos (approximate), and the same ticket covers Xochitecatl, the paired pyramid complex nearby. There is usually an extra charge to use a video camera. These figures are approximate and the site verifies exact hours and prices separately.

How long to allow

Give the murals themselves 45 minutes to an hour if you look closely, and a half day if you add Xochitecatl. It is an easy morning, not a full-day marathon.

Best time of day

Arrive right at opening. You will have the Battle Mural nearly to yourself before tour groups and school trips filter in, and the walk up is cooler. Late morning onward gets busier and hotter on the exposed approach.

What to bring

  • Water and a hat — the murals are roofed, but the climb up and Xochitecatl are fully open to the sun.
  • Cash in pesos — card payment is not reliable at rural INAH sites.
  • Comfortable shoes — there are stairs and uneven stone.
  • A small binocular or zoom — helps read the mural detail from the walkway, since you cannot get right up against it.

There is limited food and few services at the site, so eat before you come or plan lunch back in Tlaxcala or Puebla.
