Getting there & around

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala

Getting to Cacaxtla

Cacaxtla sits in rural Tlaxcala, near the village of San Miguel del Milagro, with no town of its own around it. Most people arrive from one of three bases.

  • From Tlaxcala city — roughly 40 minutes by car, the most common approach.
  • From Puebla — roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car, depending on traffic leaving the city.
  • From Mexico City — about 2 to 2.5 hours by car or a bus to Tlaxcala or Puebla first, then a local hop. Plan a full day if you come from here.

The nearest airport is Puebla (PBC), but almost everyone flies into Mexico City and drives out.

By bus and colectivo

You can reach it on public transport, but it takes patience. From Tlaxcala or Puebla, take a second-class bus or colectivo toward Nativitas or Zacatelco and ask for the desviación to Cacaxtla, then walk or grab a short mototaxi up to the entrance. Times are approximate and service thins out in the afternoon, so start early and confirm the last return before you commit.

Getting around once there

Everything at the site is on foot, and it involves a climb up to the platform plus a walkway around the murals. Xochitecatl, the paired pyramid site on the same ticket, is a few minutes away by car or a longer uphill walk. A friend who lives nearby would tell you to just drive or hire a taxi for the day. It removes the guesswork, and there is little to no shade or services while you wait for infrequent buses.
