Day trips

Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosi

Trips worth making

Real de Catorce is remote, so most “day trips” are really short excursions out of town rather than long drives. The best ones stay close and lean on the desert and the mountain.

Pueblo Fantasma and the cliff viewpoints — around 30 to 60 minutes by Willys jeep each way (approximate). The ghost-pueblo ruins above town and the cliff-edge overlooks of the Wirikuta desert are the standout outing here. Worth it, and the jeep ride is half the experience.

Wirikuta desert floor and Estacion Catorce — roughly 1 to 1.5 hours down the mountain (approximate). The wide sacred desert, dotted with the villages the Wixarika pass through on pilgrimage, is a different landscape entirely. Worth it if you go with respect and a guide; this is sacred ground, not a peyote outing.

Cerro Quemado — a short guided ride or hike from town to the sacred peak. Worth it for the views, but understand it holds deep religious meaning for the Wixarika, so tread lightly and follow your guide.

Matehuala — about 1 to 1.5 hours down at the base of the mountain (approximate). Not a destination in itself, but the practical town for banks, supplies and bus connections. Only worth a stop if you need it.

Honest take: the magic here is the town and the immediate hills. You do not need to drive far. One jeep excursion to the viewpoints plus a slow day on foot is the right shape for a two-day visit.
