Getting there & around

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo

Getting to Playa del Carmen

From Cancun airport (CUN)

The nearest airport is about 50 to 65 km north, roughly a one-hour drive.

  • ADO bus. The comfortable, honest-value option. Air-conditioned coaches run frequently from the airport straight to Playa’s downtown bus terminal, taking around an hour to 75 minutes. This is what we’d do.
  • Shared or private shuttle. Pricier, door to door, worth it with luggage or a group.
  • Rental car. Useful if you want cenotes and beaches on your own schedule. The highway is easy; watch for topes (speed bumps) and the occasional checkpoint.
  • Taxi. Available but the most expensive; agree the fare first.

From elsewhere on the coast

ADO connects Playa to Tulum (about an hour), Cancun city, and beyond. The new Tren Maya also serves the region, though schedules and stations are still settling in, so check current times.

Getting around town

Playa is flat and walkable; you can cross the tourist core on foot in 15 to 20 minutes. For anything further:

  • Taxis are plentiful but have no meters. Agree the price before getting in, or use a rideshare app where available.
  • Colectivos (shared vans) run along the highway and are the cheap local way to reach nearby beaches and towns.
  • The Cozumel ferry leaves from the downtown dock, roughly a 45-minute crossing, with departures through the day.

Honest note: you do not need a car to enjoy the town itself, only to explore the coast and cenotes freely.
