Cozumel, Quintana Roo

Getting there

By ferry (most common)

Most people arrive by passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen. The crossing takes roughly 45 minutes and boats run frequently through the day. It lands right in San Miguel, walking distance from town hotels. Seas can be choppy on the crossing — if you’re prone to seasickness, sit low and central.

To reach Playa del Carmen, fly into Cancun airport and drive or take a shuttle down the highway (about an hour to Playa, then the ferry).

By air

Cozumel has its own airport (CZM) just outside town with direct flights from some US cities and connections through Mexico City and Cancun. A taxi from the airport into San Miguel is a short ride. Flying straight in saves the ferry but usually costs more than routing through Cancun.

Car ferry

A separate vehicle ferry runs from Calica, south of Playa del Carmen. Most visitors skip it and rent on the island instead.

Getting around

  • Rental car — the easiest way to see the reefs’ shore access and drive the island loop. Book ahead in high season.
  • Scooter — cheap and fun, but the ring road is fast and scooters cause most tourist injuries. Only if you’re confident.
  • Taxis — plentiful in and around San Miguel, fixed zone pricing. Agree the fare before you get in. No app-based rides here, so taxis are your default without a car.
  • On foot — San Miguel town is fully walkable.
