Cholula, Puebla

Trips worth making

Cholula’s best feature as a base is how close it sits to bigger things. In practice, Cholula itself is the day trip from Puebla — but if you are staying here, these are the runs worth making.

Puebla city — about 15 to 20 minutes

The obvious one, and the best. Puebla is a full colonial city: the cathedral, the Talavera-tiled facades, the Callejón de los Sapos antiques street, and some of the finest food in the country. If you do one thing from Cholula, do this. Genuinely worth it, and it is barely a trip at all.

Atlixco — about 30 to 40 minutes

A smaller Pueblo Mágico south of Cholula, known for its flower nurseries, colorful streets and a pretty hilltop viewpoint. Calm and photogenic. Worth it if you have a spare half-day and want another small town without the crowds.

Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl foothills — around 1 to 1.5 hours

The volcanoes loom over Cholula, and you can drive toward the national park area between them for hiking and big views. Popocatépetl is active, so access depends on current conditions — check before you commit. Worth it for hikers on a clear day, skippable otherwise.

Cholula to Tlaxcala — about 1 hour

The small neighboring state capital has a handsome main square and the murals and ruins at Cacaxtla nearby. A worthwhile detour if you are a history traveler with a full day; otherwise a lower priority than Puebla or Atlixco.

Travel times are approximate and depend on traffic and transport.
