Cholula

A church on the world's largest pyramid, and beer after

“The world's largest pyramid by volume hides under a hilltop church, plus a lively student bar scene. Half a day, easily paired with Puebla.”

What Cholula actually is

Cholula is a university town 15 minutes west of Puebla city, built on top of the Great Pyramid of Cholula — the largest pyramid by volume anywhere in the world. You would not know it to look at it. Centuries of erosion turned the pyramid into what looks like a grassy hill, and the Spanish planted a yellow church, the Santuario de los Remedios, right on the summit. That layered history is the whole point of a visit.

The honest verdict

It is worth it, and it is easy. The pyramid draws you in for the strange thrill of walking tunnels dug through a pre-Hispanic monument, then climbing to a church with a wide view of the Popocatépetl volcano. Add a lively student bar and taco scene after dark, and you have a genuinely good half-day. What Cholula is not is a full-blown destination on its own — it is small, and you will exhaust the highlights quickly. Treat it as a companion to Puebla, not a replacement.

Getting oriented

There are really two Cholulas, split by the pyramid: San Pedro Cholula on the west side, quieter and more residential, and San Andrés Cholula on the east, younger and busier thanks to the universities. Most of what a visitor wants — the pyramid, the zócalo, the church, the bars — sits within a walkable core. Half a day covers the sights; a full day lets you slow down and drink it in. Come in March, October or November for dry, mild weather. Skip peak summer, when afternoon storms flood the lawns.

How we’d play it

Do the pyramid tunnels and the hilltop church in the cool of the morning, before tour buses and heat arrive. Wander down to the San Pedro zócalo for lunch, then cross toward the university side as the afternoon cools. Stay for tacos and a beer as the student crowd fills the bars. If you are basing in Puebla, the last colectivo or Uber back is quick and cheap.

Same weather as Puebla, 15 minutes away. The pyramid tunnel is cool and dry year-round; the surrounding lawns flood in heavy summer rain.
