Day trips

Atlixco, Puebla

Trips worth making nearby

Atlixco itself is really a day trip from Puebla, so most of these pair naturally with a Puebla base rather than an Atlixco one.

Puebla city — about 30 to 40 minutes. The obvious anchor. Colonial center, superb food, museums, and far more to fill a day than Atlixco has. Honestly, if you’re deciding between the two, Puebla wins. Very worth it.

Cholula — about 30 minutes. The great pyramid with the church on top, a lively town, and a good food-and-bar scene. It sits between Atlixco and Puebla, making it easy to combine. Very worth it.

Val’Quirico — about 45 minutes to an hour. A built-from-scratch Tuscan-style village of shops and restaurants. Popular with families and photos, but it’s a manufactured attraction — go only if that’s your thing. Situational.

Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl foothills — around an hour-plus. You get the volcano views from Atlixco itself, but the national park area on the Puebla-Mexico state line is a bigger outing for hikers. Check current volcanic activity and access before planning; conditions change. Worth it for hikers, skip otherwise.

Africam Safari — about an hour toward Puebla. A drive-through safari park that kids love. Situational — great with children, skippable without.

The honest take

The strongest nearby stops — Puebla and Cholula — are exactly why Atlixco is a bonus rather than a base. Sleep in Puebla, day-trip out to the smaller towns, and you’ll cover the best of this corner without backtracking.
