Is it safe?
Oaxaca City, Oaxaca
Short answer: yes, with ordinary city sense. The historic center is busy and walkable well into the evening, and violent crime against visitors is rare. What actually happens here is petty: phones lifted from café tables, bags left on chair backs.
Keep your phone off the table, use cards or small bills, and take a taxi de sitio or a DiDi after midnight instead of walking dark blocks alone. The one real caution: protests and blockades around the Zócalo are a normal part of civic life — they’re not dangerous, but they reroute traffic, so build in slack on travel days.
