Things to do
San Pancho (San Francisco), Nayarit
What is genuinely worth your time
San Pancho is not a checklist town. The point is to slow down. But a few things are worth building a day around, and a couple are oversold.
The beach and the walk
The wide, open beach is the main event, mostly for walking, watching the surf and sunsets rather than casual swimming. The shorebreak is punchy, so treat swimming as a strong-swimmer activity and judge it by the day. The sunset from the sand is genuinely good and costs nothing.
Surfing, if you already surf
There is a beach break here for intermediates and up. It is not a beginner wave, and there are no gentle nursery conditions like Sayulita’s. If you are learning, take a lesson down in Sayulita and save San Pancho for when you can already stand up.
Turtle releases (seasonal)
Roughly August through December, the local conservation project runs baby-turtle releases at sunset. When it is running, it is worth it and low-key magical, especially with kids. Off-season there is nothing to see, so don’t plan around it outside those months.
Entreamigos community center
A well-run local nonprofit and community space with a shop, workshops and events. Worth a look, and worth supporting.
The polo club
San Pancho has a polo and sports club that runs matches and events in season. Fun and a bit surreal for a beach town, but it is a nice-to-have, not a reason to come.
What is oversold
- San Pancho as a nightlife town. It is quiet by design. A few good bars, but if you want a scene, that is Sayulita.
- Beginner beach days. The picture-perfect beach photos hide a heavy shorebreak. Manage expectations before you bring the floaties.
Honest ranking: beach walk and sunset first, seasonal turtle release second, surfing if you already surf, everything else as bonus.
