Things to do

Tepoztlán, Morelos

What’s genuinely worth it

Climb the Tepozteco (the main event)

The pyramid on the ridge is why most people come, and it earns it — not for the small ruin itself but for the climb and the valley view from the top. It’s a steep, rocky trail that takes most people around 45 minutes to over an hour up, depending on fitness, plus a modest entry fee at the top. Start early, wear real shoes, carry water. This is the one thing to prioritize. Skip it only if you physically can’t do stairs and steep rock.

The Sunday tianguis and daily market

The big weekend street market spills through the center with food, crafts, mezcal and the famous itacates and tepoznieves (local ices). Genuinely fun to graze through. There’s also a smaller everyday market in the municipal hall. Worth it — just know the Sunday version comes bundled with the crowds and traffic.

The ex-convent of Tepoztlán (Dominican)

The 16th-century fortress-like former convent right in the center is quietly one of the best things here, and often overlooked because people rush the pyramid. The stone entrance mural and the calm cloisters are worth 30 to 45 minutes. Usually low or no cost.

What’s oversold

  • Temazcal ceremonies and “energy” tours. Tepoztlán markets itself as a mystical, spiritual place. A temazcal steam can be a good experience, but the aura-reading, crystal-shop version is tourist theater — take it or leave it.
  • Weekend “wander the shops.” The artisan and souvenir shopping is fine but repetitive, and on weekends you’re doing it shoulder-to-shoulder. Don’t build a day around it.

Honest ranking

Tepozteco first, ex-convent second, market third (or first if you’re here for food). Everything else is optional.
