Where to stay

Morelia, Michoacan

Base in or near the center

Morelia is compact, and everything you came for is in or around the historic center. Staying within walking distance of the cathedral is the easiest call for almost everyone.

Centro Historico

The heart of the city, wrapped around the cathedral and the main plazas. Stay here and you walk to the sights, the markets and the best restaurants. You get colonial hotels in old pink-stone buildings, from simple to grand. The trade-off is noise: it is a working center with traffic, church bells and the occasional late gathering. Best for first-timers and anyone who wants to do the whole visit on foot.

Near the aqueduct and Fuente Las Tarascas

A short walk east of the core, along the leafy Calzada Fray Antonio de San Miguel and around the aqueduct. Quieter and greener than the dead center, still walkable to everything. Good for couples and anyone wanting a calmer night’s sleep without giving up the location.

Santa Maria and the hills

Up on the southern hillside overlooking the city, this residential zone has a few boutique hotels with views. You will rely on taxis or a car to get down to the center, so it suits people with wheels who want quiet over convenience.

Who should base elsewhere

If your main goal is Lake Patzcuaro, the artisan towns or the monarch reserves, consider splitting nights: two in Morelia for the city and food, then a night in Patzcuaro to be closer to the lake and an early butterfly start. Budget travelers will find cheaper guesthouses a few blocks off the plazas, which is a fine trade for a five-minute walk.
