Getting there & around

Morelia, Michoacan

Getting there

By air. Morelia’s airport (MLM) sits about 40 minutes east of the center and handles domestic flights plus some US routes. It is small and easy. A taxi or ride app into town takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes; budget the equivalent of a mid-range city cab fare, more from the airport’s official desk.

By bus. This is the mainstay. First-class buses connect Morelia to Mexico City in about four hours, and to Guadalajara in around three and a half to four. The comfortable, safest option is the toll-highway first-class services from the main bus terminal on the edge of town. From the terminal, grab an authorized taxi into the center.

By car. The toll highways from Mexico City and Guadalajara are good and reasonably quick. Drive in daylight and stay on the cuota (toll) roads rather than the free libre routes, which wander through rural areas better avoided. Once in the city, the center’s one-way streets and scarce parking make a car more hassle than help.

Getting around

The historic center is small and flat enough to do entirely on foot, and that is how you should see it. For anything beyond walking distance, use ride apps or sitio (authorized) taxis, both cheap by international standards. City buses run everywhere but are confusing for a short visit and not worth the puzzle.

Honest note

For day trips to Patzcuaro and the monarch reserves, you will want either a car or an organized tour. Public transport reaches the towns but eats your day; the butterfly sanctuaries in particular are far easier with a driver or guided trip.
