Getting there & around

Tequila, Jalisco

Getting to Tequila

Tequila sits about 65 km northwest of Guadalajara, roughly an hour to an hour and a half by road depending on traffic leaving the city. Guadalajara (GDL) is the airport you fly into.

By car

The easiest option. A straightforward highway run from Guadalajara, around an hour outside rush hour. You get freedom to reach the fields and leave when the crowds arrive. Note the last stretch and the country roads are narrower - drive them in daylight.

By bus

Frequent, cheap and comfortable enough. Buses to Tequila leave from Guadalajara’s old central bus station regularly through the day; approximate travel time is around 1.5 to 2 hours with stops. Fares are modest (approximate - confirm at the counter). This is the sensible car-free option.

The tourist train

A tequila-brand tourist train runs from Guadalajara out to Tequila as a full-day packaged experience with tastings aboard. It is scenic and social but pricey and slow, and it locks you into the group schedule and the crowded midday window. Fun as an event, not efficient as transport.

Getting around once there

The town center is small and entirely walkable - you will not need a vehicle for the plaza, the church and the in-town distilleries. To reach the agave fields and outlying estates, take a local tour, a taxi, or drive. Distances are short, just a few minutes out of town.

Honest note

If you want the quiet evening version of Tequila, do not rely on the last bus or the train - both leave in the afternoon. Either drive or stay overnight.
