Day trips
Tequila, Jalisco
Trips worth making nearby
Tequila is itself usually the day trip from Guadalajara, but if you have based here or want to extend, a few things nearby are worth the drive.
The agave fields and Tequila Volcano
Barely a trip - the fields start at the edge of town, and the volcano rises behind them. Short drives and countryside tours take you deep into the UNESCO landscape. Worth it: this is the reason the region is famous.
Los Azules and the river canyon area
Around the region are swimming spots, waterfalls and hot springs down toward the river canyon - approximately 30 to 45 minutes out depending where you go. Worth it if the weather is warm and you want a break from tasting rooms; this is where locals cool off.
Guadalajara
Roughly an hour to an hour and a half by road. If you have not seen it, Mexico’s second city has the cathedral, the mariachi heritage, the huge markets and the arts town of Tlaquepaque and Tonala. Worth it - but it is a full day or more in its own right, not a quick side trip.
Magdalena and the opal country
The town of Magdalena, about 30 to 40 minutes northwest, is Mexican opal-mining country. Worth it only if gemstones interest you; otherwise skip.
Honest take
Most people do not need day trips from Tequila - the town plus its fields is a one-day story. These are for travelers who slowed down and stayed, or who want to pair the region with time in Guadalajara.
