Is it safe?
Real del Monte, Hidalgo
Short answer: yes, Real del Monte is one of the calmer places you can visit in central Mexico. It’s a small pueblo mágico that lives on weekend visitors, and the vibe on the streets reflects that — relaxed, walkable, family-heavy on weekends.
Day and night
The centre — the plaza, the church, the paste-shop streets and up to the English cemetery — is comfortable to walk by day. At night the town simply goes quiet; most shops close early and the streets empty out, so there’s little happening rather than anything to fear. If you’re staying over, walk the lit main streets and you’ll be fine. There are no zones you specifically need to avoid.
The real risks
They’re the ordinary ones, and none are dramatic:
- The cobbles and the slopes. The streets are steep and uneven, and wet fog makes them slick. Sensible shoes matter more here than any crime worry.
- The cold and damp. Getting caught out at 2,700 metres without a jacket is the most likely way your day goes wrong. Bring layers.
- The mountain road. The drive up from Pachuca is windy and can fog in. Take it slow, especially after dark or in rain.
- Petty theft. Standard market-crowd caution on busy weekends — watch your bag, don’t flash valuables. That’s the ceiling of it.
What a friend who lives here would tell you: worry about your footing and your jacket, not your safety.
