Getting there & around
Real del Monte, Hidalgo
Real del Monte is easy to reach — it’s essentially a short hop above Pachuca, and that’s how nearly everyone arrives.
Getting there
- From Pachuca (the usual way). About 30 minutes up the mountain by car, taxi or ride-app. There are also local buses and colectivos running up from Pachuca frequently through the day for a few pesos — cheap, a bit slower, and the simplest option if you don’t drive. The road is windy and climbs fast; it can fog in, so allow extra time in bad weather.
- From Mexico City. Roughly two hours total. Take a bus from Mexico City’s northern terminal (Central del Norte) to Pachuca — a comfortable, frequent, hour-and-a-bit ride — then connect up to Real del Monte. Driving yourself is straightforward via the Pachuca highway.
- Flying. The nearest airport is Felipe Ángeles (NLU), north of Mexico City, but almost no one flies in for this. It’s a road trip.
Getting around
Once you’re here, it’s a walking town — the centre is tiny and best done on foot. The catch is the terrain: steep, cobbled and often slick with fog, so wear real shoes and take the slopes slowly.
If you want to reach the English Cemetery, the old mine sites or nearby Mineral del Chico, you’ll want a car or a taxi — those are a short drive out, not a comfortable walk. In the compact centre, though, a car is more nuisance than help; park once and walk.
