Things to do

Acapulco, Guerrero

What’s actually worth it

1. The La Quebrada cliff divers

This is the reason to come and the one thing that fully delivers. Divers plunge from a rock cliff into a narrow ocean channel, timing the leap to an incoming swell. The sunset and floodlit evening shows are the ones to catch. You can watch from the public viewpoint or pay for a seat at the terrace bar of the old hotel opposite. It’s a genuine spectacle, not a manufactured one, and it’s been running for generations. See it once and you’ve seen the best of Acapulco.

2. Old Acapulco and the zócalo

The old town square, its shaded plaza and the modest cathedral make an easy, pleasant hour in the early evening. It’s where the city still feels like a real place rather than a resort. Worth a wander before or after the divers.

3. A boat out on the bay

A short bay cruise gives you the horseshoe from the water, which is the angle that still impresses. Fine as a low-key add-on if you have the time.

What’s oversold

  • The main Costera beaches. Convenient, but the water quality in parts of the bay is not what the postcards promise, and some stretches are tired. Don’t plan your trip around a swim here.
  • The mega nightclubs. Acapulco’s reputation as a party capital is largely historical. The scene is a shadow of its heyday, and late-night bar-hopping runs into the safety concerns covered elsewhere.
  • Diamante’s newer attractions and water parks. Fine if you’re already out there with kids, not worth a special trip.

Bottom line

Come for the divers, add the old town, skip the rest. This is a one-day itinerary, and that’s honest, not stingy.
