Day trips

Acapulco, Guerrero

Trips worth making

Given the security picture across Guerrero, we’re cautious about open-ended road trips from Acapulco. A couple of nearby coastal options are reasonable if you keep to daylight and the main roads; the interior of the state is not casual sightseeing territory right now.

Pie de la Cuesta

About 30 to 40 minutes northwest (approximate). A long open-Pacific beach known for big sunsets and a freshwater lagoon behind it. The surf is strong and not for swimming, but it’s a calmer, less built-up alternative to the city beaches for an afternoon. Worth it as a low-key half-day.

Barra Vieja

Roughly 30 to 45 minutes southeast past the airport (approximate). A stretch of beach lined with palapa restaurants famous for pescado a la talla. People come mainly to eat grilled fish with their feet in the sand. Worth it if you love a long seafood lunch; otherwise skip.

What we’d skip

Longer runs to places like Taxco (the silver town, several hours inland) are appealing on paper but mean serious time on Guerrero highways. If Taxco is what you want, reach it from a different base rather than making it a day trip out of Acapulco.

Honest take

For most one-day visitors, there’s no day trip that beats simply doing Acapulco’s own highlights well and moving on. Treat these as options only if you’ve built in extra time and want more beach.
