Getting there & around
Guanajuato City, Guanajuato
Getting there
-
By air (BJX). The nearest airport is Del Bajio (BJX), near Silao, roughly a 30-to-45-minute drive from the city. It handles US connections and domestic flights. From the airport, take an authorized taxi or a pre-booked shuttle; there is no direct city bus worth relying on.
-
By bus. Guanajuato’s central bus station (Central de Autobuses) sits outside the center, about 20 minutes out. First-class lines connect it to Mexico City (roughly 4.5 to 5 hours), Guadalajara (around 3 to 4 hours), and nearby Bajio cities. From the terminal, a local bus or a short taxi gets you to the center.
-
By car. Easy to reach on the highway, painful once you arrive. The center is a maze of one-way streets and car tunnels with almost no parking. Most people leave the car at their hotel’s lot or a garage and walk.
Getting around
-
On foot. This is the answer. The center is small and pedestrian, and walking is faster than anything with wheels.
-
The tunnels and buses. Local buses run through the underground tunnels to reach neighborhoods and the bus station. Cheap but confusing for a first-timer; ask which one before boarding.
-
Taxis. Plentiful and inexpensive for short hops, the airport run, or getting uphill with luggage. Agree the fare or confirm it is metered before you set off.
Honest note
Come prepared to climb. The terrain, not the distance, is what tires people out. Wear proper shoes, and if you have mobility limits or heavy bags, base yourself close to the center to cut the number of stairs.
