Where locals go

Valladolid, Yucatán

Where residents actually go

Once the day-trippers clear out, Valladolid goes back to being an ordinary Yucatecan town, and the good stuff is where locals eat and sit.

  • The municipal market (Mercado Municipal) in the morning. This is where people buy food and eat breakfast at the cocina stalls: cochinita pibil tacos, panuchos, salbutes, fresh juices. Cheaper and better than most restaurants on the square, and busiest and best early.
  • The main square in the evening. Families come out after the heat drops. Look for the marquesita carts (crispy rolled crepes with cheese and fillings) and elote vendors. It’s the town’s living room, not a tourist show.
  • Taquerías and loncherías a few blocks off the square. Walk three or four blocks in any direction and prices halve. The panucho and lechón stands locals line up at won’t have English menus, which is exactly the point.
  • Cenote Zací in the late afternoon. Local families swim here after the tour groups leave, especially on weekends.
  • La Calzada, but early. Residents walk it for the evening air and paletas before the dinner crowd arrives.

What a local would tell you: eat breakfast at the market, not the square. Same food, half the price, and you’re sitting next to people who actually live here.
