Getting there & around

Chichén Itzá, Yucatán

Getting there

Chichén Itzá sits in central Yucatán, roughly 40 minutes west of Valladolid and about two hours east of Mérida. The nearest real airport is Mérida (MID); Cancún is farther but still a common launch point for day tours.

  • From Valladolid — the smart base. Around 40 to 45 minutes by car or colectivo. This is why we tell people to sleep in Valladolid and go at opening.
  • From Mérida — roughly two hours by highway or ADO bus. Doable as a long day, but you will not beat the crowds unless you leave very early.
  • From Cancún or the Riviera Maya — expect two and a half to three hours each way. Booked day tours dominate here, and they typically arrive mid-morning, which is exactly the crowd you want to avoid.

Approximate figures — check current schedules and toll costs before you commit.

Driving and the toll road

If you drive from the Cancún side, the cuota (toll highway 180D) is fast but the tolls add up. The free road is slower and passes through towns with topes (speed bumps) and the occasional police checkpoint — routine, just have your papers ready.

Getting around the site

There is nothing to arrange once you arrive: the ruins are flat and entirely on foot. From the entrance and parking area you walk in past the ticket booths and the vendor stalls. Wear real shoes — the ground is uneven stone and gravel — and budget two to three hours of walking in full sun. There is no shade to speak of in the main plazas.
