Visiting info
El Tajin, Veracruz
Hours and fees (approximate)
El Tajin is generally open daily from around 9am to 5pm, with last entry an hour or so before closing. Admission is a modest federal INAH fee, in the low hundreds of pesos per adult, and there is usually a separate parking charge if you drive. These figures are approximate; the site verifies exact hours and prices separately.
How long to allow
Give yourself two to three hours. That is enough to walk the main plaza, the Pyramid of the Niches, the ball courts and the upper Tajin Chico section without rushing. Serious ruins fans can easily spend longer reading the carved reliefs.
What to bring
- Water, more than you think. The lowland heat and humidity are draining.
- Hat, sunscreen and light long sleeves. Shade is limited once you leave the entrance trees.
- Real walking shoes. Paths are flat but uneven and can be slick after rain.
- Cash in pesos for the entrance, parking and the voladores tip. Card acceptance is unreliable.
Best time of day
Arrive right at opening. You beat the tour buses that roll in mid-morning, and more importantly you beat the worst of the heat, which builds fast by late morning. The voladores perform near the entrance through the day; catch a show and tip the performers, since that is largely how they earn. Skip midday visits in the hot months if you can.
