Getting there & around
Villahermosa, Tabasco
Getting there
By air. Villahermosa’s Carlos Rovirosa airport (VSA) sits about fifteen kilometers east of downtown, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. It has regular connections to Mexico City and other domestic hubs, which is the fastest way in.
By bus. The ADO first-class bus terminal downtown connects Villahermosa to the whole region. Approximate rides: Palenque around 2 to 2.5 hours, Campeche around 6 hours, Mérida around 8 to 9 hours, Mexico City overnight at 10-plus hours. Buses are comfortable and air-conditioned, which matters in this climate.
By car. Driving in from Palenque, Campeche, or the coast is straightforward on decent highways, but the city itself has heavy, aggressive traffic. In the September-to-November rains, watch for flooded roads.
Getting around
The city is spread out and too hot to walk far, so plan on wheels for anything beyond downtown.
- Taxis and ride-hail are the easy default. App-based ride-hailing works here and takes the fare-haggling out of street taxis. Short hops across town are cheap.
- Downtown on foot is fine for the Zona Luz and Malecón, but only in the cooler morning and evening hours.
- Combis and local buses run everywhere and cost almost nothing, but they’re confusing for a one-day visitor and not worth the hassle.
Honest note: for a short visit, ride-hail between La Venta, downtown, and your hotel and don’t bother renting a car unless you’re continuing a road trip.
