Getting there & around

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo

Isla Mujeres is a ferry island. You cannot drive there; you park your assumptions and your car on the mainland and boat across.

Getting there

  • From Cancún airport (CUN). Roughly 30 to 45 minutes by taxi, shuttle or bus to one of the ferry docks, depending on traffic and which dock you use.
  • The ferry. Ultramar runs the main passenger service from Puerto Juárez and from the Cancún hotel zone. Puerto Juárez is the cheaper, more frequent, faster route (about 15 to 20 minutes across) and the one locals use. Boats run frequently through the day into the evening; check the last return time before you commit to a late dinner if you are only visiting for the day. Fares are modest and paid round-trip. These are approximate figures; confirm current schedules and prices at the dock.
  • From the hotel zone. More expensive and slower, but convenient if you are staying there.

Getting around

  • On foot. The town and Playa Norte are entirely walkable. Most visitors staying in El Centro never need wheels for the north end.
  • Golf cart. The classic island rental, good for a day exploring down to Punta Sur. Book ahead in high season, drive slowly, and expect to pay by the hour or day. Note you need a driver’s license.
  • Scooter or bicycle. Cheaper than a cart. Fine for confident riders; the coast road has fast carts and blind curves, so ride defensively.
  • Taxis. Plentiful, cheap for short hops, and the sensible choice at night or after drinks.

A friend’s advice

You do not need a cart for the whole trip. Rent one for a single day to do the Punta Sur loop and walk everything else.
