Where to stay
Bacalar, Quintana Roo
Where to base yourself
Bacalar is small, so the real choice is simple: stay in town, or stay on the water. Each suits a different kind of trip.
The town center
The blocks around the plaza and the fort put you within walking distance of restaurants, cafés, the market and the bus. It’s the most convenient base for first-timers and anyone without a car, and it’s the cheapest side of town. You won’t have the lagoon at your doorstep, but it’s a short walk or cheap taxi down to the swim spots. Best for budget travelers, backpackers and people who want to eat and wander on foot.
The lagoon shore
The waterfront strip below town is where the lakefront hotels, guesthouses and a few boutique places sit, many with their own docks and swim ladders straight into the color. This is where to spend more for a room that opens onto the water and quiet mornings before the boats start. Best for couples, honeymooners and anyone whose whole reason for coming is to wake up next to the lagoon.
Costera and the quiet ends
Along the Costera (the shore road) and toward the southern edges you’ll find smaller, calmer guesthouses and eco-style stays away from the modest bit of nightlife. Good for people who want quiet and don’t mind a taxi into town at night.
Quick honest note
There’s no beach and no big resort scene — that’s the point. Nightlife is a couple of low-key bars, not a strip. Book the lagoon side ahead in the clear-water months (roughly December through May), when the good waterfront rooms go early.
