Getting there & around

Tequisquiapan, Queretaro

Getting there

By air. The nearest airport is Queretaro (QRO), roughly an hour to an hour and a half away by car depending on where in the wine route you are headed. From there, most people rent a car or arrange a driver.

By car. Driving is the natural way to do this trip, because the vineyards and cheese producers are spread across the countryside. From Queretaro city it’s roughly an hour; the roads are decent highway most of the way, then smaller rural roads near town.

By bus. Buses connect Queretaro city and San Juan del Rio to Tequisquiapan; from Queretaro it’s roughly an hour to an hour and a half, and you may change or take a local line via San Juan del Rio. Comfortable enough for the main legs, but it leaves you carless for the vineyards. (Times and fares are approximate; confirm current schedules.)

Getting around town

The center is small and made for walking. From the plaza you can reach every restaurant, wine bar and market on foot in a few minutes. The cobblestones are uneven, so wear proper shoes.

Getting to the vineyards

This is the catch. The wineries and cheese farms are minutes-to-half-an-hour out of town by road and are not walkable. Your realistic options:

  • Rent a car and drive yourself (but not after tasting).
  • Book a wine-route tour with transport included, the easiest choice if you plan to drink.
  • Hire a local driver for the afternoon.

Taxis and ride-hail exist but are thin outside the center, so don’t count on flagging one on a rural road.
