Visiting info
Sierra Gorda, Queretaro
Hours and fees
All approximate — the site verifies exact figures separately.
- The Franciscan missions (Jalpan, Concá, Landa, Tilaco, Tancoyol) are active churches, usually open to visitors through daylight hours with no fixed entry fee, though a small donation is appreciated. Dress modestly and be quiet if a service is on.
- Waterfalls and trails in the reserve often charge a small community access fee, roughly in the low tens of pesos, paid at a gate or to a local caretaker. Bring cash in small notes — cards are not an option out here.
- Guided walks and birding tours run through the local ecotourism groups; expect to arrange these a day ahead.
How long to allow
Give each mission about 30 to 45 minutes. A waterfall visit or a cloud-forest trail can eat half a day once you factor in the drive to reach it. Across three days you can comfortably fit two or three missions plus a couple of nature stops.
What to bring
- Cash — ATMs are limited to the larger towns and can run dry.
- Layers. It can be warm in Jalpan and genuinely cold and damp higher up in the cloud forest.
- Sturdy shoes, rain gear in the wet months, and sun protection.
- Insect repellent, and water for the trails.
Best time of day
Start early. Mornings are clearest before afternoon cloud and fog build over the high ground, and early light is best for birdwatching. It also gets you off the mountain roads well before dark.
