Where to stay

Sayulita, Nayarit

Where to base yourself in Sayulita

The town is small, so “where to stay” is really about how much noise you want and how far you’re willing to walk uphill.

The center

Steps from the beach, the taco stands and the bars. Best for first-timers and anyone on a short trip who wants to walk everywhere and not think about transport. The trade-off is noise — the central bars run late, and a room over the main streets will hear it. Great if you’re here to be in the middle of it; frustrating if you want early nights.

Gringo Hill and the north side

The hillside neighborhoods north of the river are quieter, greener and pricier, with villas and vacation rentals that come with a view and a walk. Best for couples, families and anyone who wants to sleep. You’re still 5 to 15 minutes on foot from the center — pleasant going down, sweaty coming back up.

South side and Playa de los Muertos

Cross the river to the south and things get calmer and more residential, close to the smaller Los Muertos beach. A good middle ground: walkable to the center but a step removed from the loudest blocks.

Budget

Sayulita is not cheap by Mexican beach-town standards. The best value is hostels and simpler guesthouses in and just behind the center, plus rentals booked well ahead in high season. Turning up without a reservation on a high-season weekend is how you end up overpaying for whatever’s left.
