Where to stay
Chacala, Nayarit
Where to base yourself
Chacala is small enough that “neighborhoods” is a generous word. In practice you’re choosing between the flat village by the sand and the hillside above it. Everything is walkable, so the choice is really about whether you want to step straight onto the beach or trade a short walk for a view and a breeze.
The beachfront village
The lane behind the sand, where the palapa restaurants and a cluster of small hotels and rentals sit. Best for first-timers and anyone here for two nights who wants to roll out of bed onto the beach. You’ll hear the restaurants at dinner and the surf at night, which most people like. This is also where the few budget-friendly posadas and guesthouses are, so it suits travelers watching their money.
The hillside and jungle edge
Above and behind the cove sit boutique guesthouses, yoga-retreat style places and vacation rentals with a bit more space and a view over the palms. Best for couples, quiet-seekers and wellness travelers who don’t mind a five-to-ten-minute walk down to the water. Breezier and more private, which helps with the heat and the bugs.
Honest notes
There is no resort strip and no nightlife district, so nobody comes here to be near bars. Book ahead in the high season (November to April) and around holidays, because inventory is genuinely tiny and fills. Confirm whether your place takes cards; many are cash-only. And ask about hot water, fans versus air conditioning, and mosquito screens before you commit.
