Getting there & around
Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco
Getting there
By air. Puerto Vallarta’s airport (PVR) sits just north of the city, near the marina. It’s well connected with direct flights from across the US, Canada and Mexican hubs. From the terminal to the Zona Romantica is roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi in normal traffic. Buy an authorized taxi ticket from the booth inside, or walk over the pedestrian bridge to the main road and grab a cheaper street taxi or app ride — approximate, and the site verifies fares separately.
By bus. First-class buses connect Vallarta with Guadalajara (roughly 5 hours) and other cities from the main bus terminal north of the airport. Comfortable and cheap by North American standards.
By car. Driving from Guadalajara is about 3.5 to 4.5 hours on the toll road. Fine, scenic in stretches, but you don’t need a car for the city itself.
Getting around
- On foot. The Zona Romantica, malecon and Los Muertos are all walkable — this is the whole point of basing there. Watch the cobbles and curbs.
- Local buses. Cheap and frequent along the bay, marked by destination in the windshield. Slow but a fraction of a taxi fare.
- Taxis and apps. Plentiful. Street taxis are unmetered — agree the price before you get in. Ride-hailing apps operate here and usually cost less; airport pickup can be restricted, so check.
- Water taxis. From Los Muertos pier and Boca de Tomatlan to the roadless south-shore beaches (Las Animas, Quimixto, Yelapa).
Honest note: traffic along the bay road clogs at peak hours, so budget extra time to and from the hotel zone.
