Things to do
Barra de Navidad, Jalisco
What is worth your time
Barra is a do-less place. The best things here are simple, and a couple of them are genuinely the reason to come.
Worth it
- The boat crossing to Colimilla. This is the headline experience. Hire a lancha at the lagoon dock, ride across to the waterside palapa restaurants, and eat grilled fish and shrimp over the water. Cheap, easy, and the thing everyone remembers. Do it once, unhurried.
- The lagoon and mangroves. Longer panga tours run through the mangrove channels with good birdlife, especially in the morning. Calm water, quiet, and a different side of the town from the beach.
- Walking the malecón at sunset. The seawall walk, an horchata or a beer, and the light going down over the Pacific. Free, and the town at its best.
- Just being on the beach. The main beach is broad and rarely crowded. Come for the space, not for calm swimming (see the safety note on undertow).
Fine, not essential
- Surf lessons. There is a beach break and outfits will teach you. Fun if you already want to surf; not a reason to come.
- Day boats to the estuary or nearby beaches. Pleasant add-ons if you have extra time.
Oversold
- The idea of Barra as a “party town.” It is not. Nightlife is a few bars and early dinners. Set your expectations to slow, and you will have a good time; arrive wanting action and you will be restless. That is the whole trade of coming here.
