Getting there & around

Huasca de Ocampo, Hidalgo

Getting there

Huasca sits in the highlands northeast of Pachuca, and there is no airport or bus terminal in the town itself. You route through Pachuca or drive in.

  • By air. The nearest airport is Felipe Ángeles (NLU), north of Mexico City, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road depending on traffic (approximate). Mexico City’s main airport (MEX) is a bit further. From either, you drive or arrange a transfer.
  • By car. This is the easiest way, and the drive from Mexico City is around 2 to 2.5 hours (approximate) via the Pachuca highway, then a short climb up to Huasca. Roads are decent to Pachuca; the last stretch is a smaller mountain road.
  • By bus. Frequent buses run from Mexico City (Central del Norte) to Pachuca in about 1.5 to 2 hours (approximate). From Pachuca’s terminal you connect to Huasca by local bus or colectivo, roughly another 45 minutes to an hour. Doable without a car, just slower and with a transfer.

Getting around

  • On foot. The town center is small and flat enough to cover on foot in an hour.
  • The countryside sites are not walkable. The Prismas, haciendas, canyons and trout ponds are spread out over several kilometers of rural road. Without a car you will rely on local taxis, colectivos or hired drivers to string them together.
  • Hiring a driver or a tour. For a car-free visitor, arranging a half-day with a local driver is the practical way to see the Prismas and a hacienda without waiting on sporadic colectivos.

Honest note: this is a place that rewards having your own wheels. Drive the rural lanes in daylight, they are narrow and dimly lit after dark.
