Getting there & around
San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato
Getting there
By air. The nearest and easiest airport is Querétaro (QRO), roughly a 1 to 1.5 hour drive away. Bajío airport in León (BJX) is another option, around 1.5 to 2 hours, sometimes with more international flights. From either, prebooked shuttles and private cars are the standard way in; many run shared vans for less. Mexico City airport is about 3.5 to 4 hours by road if fares are better.
By bus
Mexico’s long-distance buses are comfortable and reliable. Frequent services run from Mexico City (around 3.5 to 4 hours) and Querétaro (around 1 to 1.5 hours) into San Miguel’s central bus station. From there it is a short, cheap taxi to the center. This is the budget-friendly, low-stress option.
By car
Driving in is straightforward on good toll highways from Querétaro or Mexico City. The catch is town itself: narrow one-way cobbled streets, scarce and pricey parking, and slow going. If you are staying central, a car is more burden than help. If you are out in the colonias or plan lots of day trips, it earns its keep.
Getting around
- On foot. The center is walkable and that is how you should do it. Wear sturdy shoes; the cobbles and hills are hard on ankles and heels.
- Taxis. Cheap and plentiful for hops across town or up the hills. Ride apps have limited, inconsistent coverage, so a local taxi is often simpler.
- Between towns. Frequent buses link San Miguel with Guanajuato, Querétaro and Dolores Hidalgo for day trips.
